Barbara Lazarus Metz Fellowship

for continuing graduate students

The Barbara Lazarus Metz Fellowship was established to assist in defraying tuition costs for students with an interest in book, paper, and print arts and practices. The fellowship is based on creative ability and financial need.

• How to be Considered

  Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the College-Wide Graduate Scholarship Application. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. 
  
  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Barbara Lazurus Metz Fellowship application. There are three parts to the application:

  PART 1: ESSAY

  In 400-600 words, describe your interest in book, paper, and print practices, and your experiences in pursuing related creative projects. This may include past, current, and/or future projects related to book, paper,and print, but emphasis should be on future projects if possible.

   

  PART 2: PORTFOLIO

  Submit a portfolio of 10 work samples related to your interest in book, paper, and print practices.

  Submit your samples as a single .pdf file.

  Note: Upload size limit is 50MB.

   

  PART 3: FAFSA Submission Summary

  A current FAFSA Submission Summary must be on file. To receive a FAFSA Submission Summary, students must complete a 2025-26 financial aid application (FAFSA) by February 1, 2025.

• About Barbara Lazarus Metz

  Barbara Lazarus Metz was an important force in Chicago book arts. In 1983 she co-founded and later directed Artists Book Works on Irving Park, which later merged with Marilyn Sward's Paper Press to become the Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College. She was chairperson of the Book and Paper Arts exhibition committee, and was a faculty member at Columbia, as well as at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Loyola University.

  Barbara played a significant role in establishing the place of book arts in the curriculum of the Interdisciplinary Arts Department, and helped to establish an exploratory, experimental, and interdisciplinary approach to the nature of the book and its place in contemporary art practice.

• Fellowship Terms
  • The Barbara Lazarus Metz Endowed Fellowship is renewable each year, up to the duration of the program, provided the recipient: 
    • Continues to meet satisfactory progress requirements in the program
    • Enrolls full-time each semester
    • Does not interrupt enrollment
    • Has a FAFSA on file for each academic year
  • Previous maximum award amount was $3,300 per academic year, awarded half in the Fall and half in the Spring
  • Fellowship is applied toward tuition only
  • Student's scholarships that are applied toward tuition may not exceed the amount of their tuition costs
  • Recipients who interrupt their enrollment or enroll less than full-time will forfeit any remaining scholarship funds
  • Fellowship is limited to courses for which a student registers through MyColumbia
  • Recipients must have submitted all outstanding documents to Columbia Central before the scholarship can be disbursed. Students can review missing documents in the MyColumbia portal under MyFinancials
  • Fellowship may be used toward study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their fellowship during the semester spent abroad
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
  • Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the fellowship in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found
