English and Creative Writing - Poetry Scholarship

for incoming students

The English and Creative Writing - Poetry Scholarship was established to recognize the outstanding potential of an incoming freshman or transfer student who intends to major in Poetry, and to assist them in paying tuition costs.

Portfolio Submission Deadline: January 15, 2025

• How to be Considered
  • Incoming freshmen and transfer students who plan to major in Poetry will be automatically considered for the English and Creative Writing - Poetry Scholarship provided they have been admitted to the college for the Fall 2025 semester and submitted a portfolio of their work in poetry. 

   

  How to Submit Your Portfolio

  • Students may submit a portfolio from their Columbia Connect status page.
  • All portfolios must be submitted by January 15, 2025 for award consideration.
  • As specified in the Undergraduate Portfolio Guidelines, submit 10 typed pages of poetry. A poem may be longer than one page; however, please do not put more than one poem on each page. Poems should use literary techniques with skill, approach subject with originality, and demonstrate clarity of the poem’s intent. Total submission should equal 10 pages.
• Scholarship Terms
  • Student must be admitted to the college, intend to major in Poetry, and have submitted a portfolio of their work in poetry by January 15, 2025
  • Amount of this one-year scholarship is up to $1,500, awarded half in Fall and half in Spring; scholarship does not apply to Summer semesters
  • Scholarship is applied toward tuition only and is not renewable
  • Students' scholarships that are applied toward tuition may not exceed the amount of their tuition costs
  • Student must be enrolled as a full-time Poetry student during the 2025-26 academic year
  • Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their scholarship during the semester spent abroad
  • Columbia reserves the right to withhold the scholarship in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found
  • If you are receiving state or federal financial aid, the rules governing other sources of financial assistance will apply
