Biography

Martha Irvine, a longtime national correspondent for The Associated Press, has been an adjunct instructor in Columbia College Communication department since 2012. She teaches short documentary and other multimedia courses.

As a member of the AP's Global Enterprise Team, her stories — told in video, print and photos — have dealt with a broad range of topics, from poverty, education and crime to high-tech trends. Some of her most recent projects have examined the fossil fuel industry’s impact on the environment and humans.

Irvine’s multimedia work has been recognized by the Webby Awards, the National Edward R. Murrow Awards, the AP Managing Editors (APME) and the Chicago Headline Club’s Lisagor Awards, among others. She also received a Studs Terkel Award, an honor given to journalists who go beyond official sources to tell the stories of everyday people.

Irvine began her full-time journalism career at a rural daily newspaper in Australia, after graduating from the University of Michigan. She later earned a Master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York.
