The industry runs on collaboration. Fortunately, Columbia offers you plenty of opportunities to work with students in your own program as well as across disciplines, such as acting, design, audio, and music.

The Student Experience

As a Film and Television (BFA) major, you’ll choose from one of six concentrations and collaborate with your peers to create thought-provoking films. Each individual brings their own strengths to projects, whether it’s the ability to light a shot perfectly, write a compelling script, or edit the perfect cut. By working closely with a diverse group of students, you’ll gain perspective and learn more about yourself as a filmmaker.

  • Learn about storytelling and get hands-on filmmaking experience

Early on, you can put theory to work with hands-on filmmaking and build relationships with fellow filmmakers. You’ll also learn what makes a good story and develop your critical analysis skills.

  • Work on sets with other student filmmakers

We encourage students at all levels to collaborate on projects, and we host meet-and-greets so you can seek out creative partners. Many students also participate in commercial film and TV projects outside the college.

  • Get a real-world education from working filmmakers

Our faculty includes film industry professionals, such as documentarians and film editors, who stay up-to-date with industry trends and teach them in the classroom.
