About the Photojournalism Major

Columbia College Chicago is home to one of the most innovative photojournalism programs in the country. Faculty members are experienced photojournalists and filmmakers who document for the "Chicago Sun-Times" and "The Washington Post." This program provides a solid foundation in photography technique, covering equipment from professional cameras to smartphones. The Student Experience

As a Photojournalism student at Columbia, you’ll learn how to tell a compelling visual story. This program incorporates photography, video, audio, and web development in addition to journalistic reporting and writing. You’ll learn to work on deadline and how to find, follow, capture, and file your stories.

These classes emphasize practical experience, allowing you to build a portfolio from day one.

  • Create a door-opening body of workIn your senior year, you’ll participate in the Multimedia Journalism Lab capstone course, where you’ll curate your video reel and refine your portfolio with faculty mentorship. This hands-on project culminates in a showcase of your digital journalism skills.
