The Student Experience

At Columbia College Chicago, you’ll gain hands-on experience from day one, working on live productions and collaborating across disciplines. With 20-40 productions annually, including Mainstage and student-led shows, you’ll develop practical skills in design, technical theatre, and performance. Foundational courses in theatre history and theory will provide context, while a dedicated career class helps you build a portfolio and prepare for your professional journey.

  • Excel through hands-on learning

    Engage immediately in the creative process by working on live productions. Students will have the opportunity to crew, hang lights, build sets, design sound, and construct costumes from their first year.

    Work on a wide range of productions, including faculty-directed Mainstage shows and student-led projects, totaling 20-40 productions annually.

  • Internships that jumpstart your career

    Students may work as crew members, assistant designers, or assistant technical directors in professional theatres. This immersive experience allows students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings.

  • Networking opportunities

    The Theatre Department hosts two internship fairs each academic year, connecting students with representatives from prominent theatres like Steppenwolf, Victory Gardens, and Goodman Theatre, as well as smaller storefronts.
