Jackie Spinner takes home award for her opinion piece about student journalism.

Jackie Spinner, a professor in the Columbia College Chicago Communication Department and faculty advisor at “The Columbia Chronicle,” received a 2023 Peter Lisagor Award at a ceremony hosted Friday, May 10, 2024, by the Chicago Headline Club. 

The Lisagor Awards honor the best journalism produced in Illinois and northwest Indiana from across print, digital, and broadcast media. 

Spinner won in the “best column or editorial from a small print/online publication” for her piece in “Gateway Journalism Review” entitled “Chicago Adjunct Strike Provides Student Journalists With an Invaluable Reporting Lesson.”  

The opinion piece, which was published in December 2023, recognizes the student “Chronicle” staff for their vigilant fact checking and data mining while local media outlets relied heavily on social media for information.
