Columbia College Chicago and Partners to Host Chicago Premiere of "Meanwhile" with Director Q&A, February 24

Columbia College Chicago's office of Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Office of the Provost, in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Photography, will present the first Chicago screening of "Meanwhile," a documentary directed by Catherine Gund, on February 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash Ave. After the screening, there will be a discussion with Gund and Columbia faculty panelists and a student-led interview.
This event is part of an initiative developed in collaboration with directors Eric Scholl and Wen-Hwa Ts’ao (School of Film and Television), and Ames Hawkins (School of Communication and Culture), with strong support from Columbia’s Provost and President.
"Meanwhile” offers a moving and insightful reflection on race, resistance, and resilience across an array of creatives’ responses. The film weaves art, dance, archival footage, and spoken word together, offering a reflective look at collective action and resilience in the face of systemic oppression. Written by Jacqueline Woodson, with a soundscape by Meshell Ndegeocello, "Meanwhile" invites viewers to consider how movements for justice shape our shared experiences.
"I hope the film sparks a new lexicon, a new way of seeing, one that transforms binaries and fixed identities," says Gund in a statement. "By understanding identity as an experience and embracing the chaos of existence, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and forge connections that transcend the limitations of our current reality."
Admission to the screening is free with RSVP.
