Literary Legends Reimagined: Columbia and Glessner House Present Special Women’s History Month Performance of “You on the Moors Now”

Columbia partners with Glessner House for a performance of “You on the Moors Now,” a bold reimagining of four literary heroines who challenge societal expectations.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Columbia College Chicago’s School of Theatre and Dance is partnering with Glessner House for a special performance of "You on the Moors Now" on Tuesday, March 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Glessner House, 1800 South Prairie Ave., Chicago.

"You on the Moors Now" explores themes of independence, feminism, and literary legacy. Written by Jaclyn Backhaus, the play reimagines four iconic 19th-century literary heroines—Jane Eyre, Jo March, Elizabeth Bennet, and Cathy Earnshaw—as they reject societal norms and carve out their own paths.

Four literary heroines of the nineteenth century set conventionalism ablaze when they turn down marriage proposals from their equally famous gentlemen callers. What results is a confluence of love, anger, grief, and bloodshed, as the ensemble struggles to reconcile romantic ideologies of the past with their modern ideas of courtship. Everything you’ve learned about love from the pages of "Pride and Prejudice," "Wuthering Heights," "Jane Eyre," and "Little Women" is turned upside down in this grand theatrical battle royale.

During the event, the play’s four lead actresses will perform excerpts while providing insight into the novelists—Charlotte Brontë, Louisa May Alcott, Jane Austen, and Emily Brontë—and their influence on the feminist movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. A reception with wine and light refreshments will precede the performance, which begins at 7 p.m.

The lead roles are performed by the following Columbia students:

  • Cathy Earnshaw: Nora Logan
  • Jo March: Kellie McMickle
  • Jane Eyre: Molly McVey
  • Elizabeth Bennet: Sofia Roldan

Tickets are $25 per person or $20 for Glessner House members. Purchase tickets online.

This special event complements the School of Theatre and Dance’s main production of "You on the Moors Now" at Columbia College Chicago’s Sheldon Patinkin Theatre, 72 E. 11th St. The production runs from March 5-15, with multiple performances, including two ASL-interpreted shows on March 12 and 13.
