Resource Reboot: School of Communication and Culture Maximizes Potential of Existing Spaces and Equipment
The School of Communication and Culture at Columbia College Chicago recently hosted an open house to showcase newly renovated spaces and repurposed equipment on the second floor of the 33 E. Ida B. Wells building. Faculty and staff reimagined the broadcast studio space, now called the Live TV Studio, and created the adjacent two-button Digital Content Studio. The goals: To foster flexibility and hands-on learning as well as promote access to resources more broadly across campus.
“We rebooted space and equipment to better meet the demands of our students, faculty and staff,” says Ames Hawkins, interim director of the School of Communication and Culture.
Live Streaming and More
In the Live TV Studio, you’ll find a state-of-the-art virtual background. There’s also now a Black Magic digital camera system along with vMix, a live video and streaming software system.
“These are two of the primary systems that our students will use if they choose to work in the television market after graduation,” says Professor Jackie Spinner, who spearheaded the redesign of the spaces.
Thanks to some assistance from Film and Television and Theatre students and faculty, the Live TV Studio, where the students produce “South Loop TV” and “Chronicle TV,” has also been refurbished. It can transform into an event space that holds up to 50 people and is now home to an equipment cage where students can check out digital cameras and video recorders as well as microphones, a mobile teleprompter, mobile light kits, and audio equipment.
Content Creators Welcome at New Studio
The new Digital Content Studio welcomes content creators — whether they’re students, faculty, or staff — to use the space and work with either staff technician Joshua Havens or a student technician to bring their ideas to life. Featuring a new green screen and Chicago background screen as well as production and postproduction capabilities, the studio can help produce vlogs, podcasts, and more.
“It's extraordinary to have these capabilities in place,” Spinner says. “And it’s even better that we can share it with the campus community.”
To reserve a session at the new Digital Content Studio, Columbia community members can visit space.colum.edu and search for “Digital Content Studio.”
