What Might a Columbia Education Mean?
The College Assembly and the Universal Learning Outcomes Committee (ULOC) are inviting students, faculty, staff and administration to discuss recommendations for college-wide learning outcomes. The event will take place on Monday, Nov. 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at 623 S. Wabash, Lecture Hall 109.
For the ULOC, developing clear learning outcomes ensures that the college will continue to offer all students the best possible education, distinguishable from other institutions (while maintaining a keen awareness of the best practices in higher education), and developing a mechanism by which the college can assess and be held accountable for educational excellence.
Along with the ULOC, Senior Vice President and Provost Stan Wearden devised four other committees to help with first-year implementation of the Strategic Plan: Columbia Core, Integrated First-Year Experience, Community Engagement and the Registration and New Student Orientation.
The next step for the ULOC will be to to draft recommendations based on the feedback gathered at this event and the extensive research on other successful institutions. These recommendations will go to the Provost on Dec. 15, 2015. Once complete, the ULOC will serve as a touchstone for the college-wide revision of the Columbia Core Curriculum and all major and minor curricula.
