Chicago-based educators invest in the next generation of coders.

CHICAGO—April 12, 2019. Columbia College Chicago Online (Columbia Online) is partnering with Rush University Medical Center to offer students and instructors at Chicago’s Richard T. Crane Medical Preparatory High School an opportunity to participate in software coding classes in support of Apple’s “Everyone Can Code” initiative.

The 16-week program will immerse both students and instructors at Crane in Apple’s Swift coding language. With a combination of curriculum designed and delivered by Columbia Online and in-class support at Crane, the program will cover two 8-week courses: "Foundations of Swift Coding and iOS" and "App Design with Swift Programming."

“Coding skills have never been more in demand than now,” said Rob Green, vice provost of digital learning at Columbia Online. “Columbia College Chicago Online is thrilled to be able to share our curriculum with the students and instructors at Crane in support of the larger effort to contribute to the city’s future workforce development needs.”

Apple specifically designed Swift to be easy to learn and teach code, making it an ideal entry point for students of all ages. By providing this gateway into app development, students with no background in coding are able to explore technological skills that complement future careers in growing technological industries.

The program is partially underwritten by JPMorgan Chase & Co. This funding matched with support from Columbia College Chicago highlights the increasingly collaborative effort within Chicago to create a thriving and sustainable technological workforce.
