Columbia Alums Among NAACP Image Award Winners and Nominees

Columbia alums were honored for their work during the 53rd annual NAACP Image Awards.

Columbia College Chicago is pleased to announce that Columbia Alum Angel Kristi Williams MFA ’15 was named the winner in the Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Television) category for “Colin in Black & White” during the 2022 NAACP Image Awards.

Columbia also proudly recognizes the alumni nominated this year: the late Diane Weyermann ’92 for Outstanding Documentary (“My Name is Pauli Murray”); adjunct faculty member Jonathan McReynolds ’11 for Outstanding Gospel/Christian Album (“Jonny x Mali: Live in LA”); and Ray Nowosielski ’03 for Outstanding News and Information Podcast (“After the Uprising: The Death of Danyé Dion Jones”). Carl Seaton ’94 was remarkably nominated twice in the same category: Outstanding Directing for both “Snowfall, Fight or Flight” and “Godfather of Harlem - The Bonanno Split.”

While not nominated individually, Columbia alums can also be found behind award-winning and nominated works. Paul Garnes ’96, HDR ’16, was the executive producer of the award-winning Outstanding Drama Series “Queen Sugar” and the Outstanding Television Movie, Limited Series, or Dramatic Sequel “Colin in Black & White” (one episode was directed by award-winner Angel Kristi Williams). The team of the nominated Outstanding Independent Motion Picture—"The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain”—included Columbia alums Adam Orton ‘10 (co-producer), Garrett Beelow ‘17 (music), Camrin Petramale ’11 (cinematography), Jacquelin Stanford ’15 (production designer), and Lisa Heitman ’15 (makeup artist). And Columbia alums James Carroll MFA ’16 and Catherine Nguyen MFA ’20 played important roles helping to score “Encanto,” winner of the Outstanding Animated Motion Picture.
