Social Justice, Creativity, and Placemaking in Summertime Chi
This summer the college will be launching its first-ever Summer Institute as part of the Social Justice Initiative.
The Summer Social Justice Institute is an intensive immersive experience where students can focus on their own academic discipline or creative practice during the summer while integrating and expanding their knowledge on a range of issues related to social justice.
Senior Associate Provost Nate Bakkum says, “The creative community of Columbia College Chicago is connected to so much artmaking and activism throughout the city. The Social Justice Institute gives us a great new opportunity to connect with diverse practitioners during the amazing flourishing of creativity that animates the city each summer.”
Raquel Monroe, Co-Director of Academic DEI, describes the institute as “a wonderful way to illuminate how the practices artists, makers, and scholars enact in interdisciplinary collaboration offers strategies for doing the hard work of interrogating power and privilege, which is part of the mission of our DEI work.”
Students from all academic disciplines are invited to apply and with the city as their classroom, will have the unique opportunity to explore the concept of critical race theory through the lens of Chicago’s Black and Brown festivals and performances, reimagine an equity-based future for the city’s public spaces, and select course topics about the ways artists engage with issues of power, privilege, and justice through their work.
All students admitted to the Summer Social Justice Initiative will be awarded a scholarship due to generous donor support for this initiative.
