Columbia College Exhibition: Cargo Space: Chicago/Milwaukee
CHICAGO (July 29, 2014) – Columbia College Chicago’s A+D Gallery presents Cargo Space: Chicago/Milwaukee, running Aug. 14 through Sept. 20. The exhibition will take place in galleries in Chicago and Milwaukee and on a refurbished 27’ diesel transit bus traveling between the cities. This artist-centered experiment promotes an alternative model for social, creative and curatorial engagement and connects artists and art organizations across state lines.
Part tour bus, part utility vehicle, the bus forms a mobile platform for dialogue, creation and community among artists. Founders Christopher Sperandio and Simon Grennan conceived the project in order to promote exchange between artists from cities outside of the major art centers. Houston-based Sperandio proposes, “by building a mobile living space, it’s possible to jump beyond the confines of real estate and fixed demographics, to take art and artists to unexpected places.”
Cargo Space: Chicago/Milwaukee is organized by Sperandio and Duncan MacKenzie, assistant professor at Columbia College Chicago and founding member of Bad at Sports. They will travel across the Midwest on the bus, making stops at the Walker Art Center’s Open Field and The Poor Farm in Manawa, WI. They’ll close the trip by setting up shop at two sites: INOVA in Milwaukee and A+D Gallery in Chicago. Select artists from each city will collaborate on exhibitions and programs that run simultaneously. The exhibition at A+D Gallery will constantly change as the residents create work and when the bus is in Chicago it will be parked at Columbia College Chicago’s Papermakers Garden as a part of the Wabash Arts Corridor.
