Columbia College Chicago Exhibition: TYPES by Display

CHICAGO (Oct. 10, 2014) - Columbia College Chicago’s Averill and Bernard Leviton A+D Gallery presents TYPES by Display, an exhibition celebrating typography, curated by Jamilee Polson Lacy, Nov. 13 – Dec. 13.
TYPES is a site-specific exhibition designed by Display, a revolving design collective and artistic rubric led by Katherine Walker, and presented in an exploration of typography as it embodies multiple methods of literary and visual communication, including print design, signage, environmental graphics and more. Using creative content from Chicago writer Claire Keys' linguistic tales of untranslatable foreign terms (think German’s schilderwald, Inuit’s iktsuarpok and Japanese's age-otori), Display will transform the gallery space into a physically all-encompassing typographical installation.
Opening Night will be kicked off with an artists lecture by Display (Katherine Walker, Ken Frederick, Claire Keys) at 4 p.m. with the opening reception following at 5 p.m.

Writer's Lecture by Claire Keys
Claire Keys, the author of the imaginative tale utilized by Display for its TYPES installation, discusses the full range of her experimental, literary and commercial projects, and talks at length about the inherently collaborative relationship between writer and designer.

Typography Workshop
A crash course in the essentials of typography, this workshop exposes participants to the vast creative, commercial and experimental capabilities of typography. Space is limited to 15 participants, thus RSVP is required. Please RSVP directly to A+D Gallery at adgallery@colum.edu. Participants must bring their own laptop installed with Adobe Illustrator.
Jamilee Polson Lacy is a writer, a curator and the founding director of Twelve Galleries Project, a transitory, collaborative exhibition experiment. Currently, Lacy helms the blog for Bad at Sports as managing editor, and formerly, she was the inaugural curator-in-residence for Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri, a curatorial writer for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Illinois, and a curatorial associate for the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, Czech Republic. She has engaged in solo and collaborative curatorial and writing projects with Academy Records, The Black Visual Archive, Chicago Artists’ Coalition & Hatch Projects, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hyde Park Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Quite Strong, Sister Cities of Chicago (for Bratislava, Helsinki and Prague) and Western Exhibitions, among others. In addition to numerous catalogue essays, interviews and articles, Lacy holds two undergraduate degrees in art history and studio arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Masters of Comparative Art and Literature from Northwestern University.
The Averill and Bernard Leviton A+D Gallery is part of the Art + Design Department at Columbia College Chicago. The gallery's mission is to present professional exhibitions and educational programming that encompasses the broadest possible definition of visual art and design. This is a direct reflection of the pedagogical diversity of the Art + Design Department and the vast array of ideas, media, and techniques explored by artists today. The gallery presents emerging and established artists whose work reflects any of the disciplines taught in the department including Fine Arts, Interior Architecture, Illustration, Advertising Art Direction, Product Design, Graphic Design and Art History.
