Renee Mudgett

Photography (BA) '21, Minor in Graphic Design

What would you say has been the most surprising thing you learned at Columbia?

I was surprised to learn about all the career avenues that are available in my field. Columbia and my professors have shared a lot of ways creatives are used in industries as well as how to become involved in galleries and exhibitions. There are many options and creative opportunities to share your art!

What experiences or courses at Columbia do you feel have been most beneficial?

Enrolling in courses from other majors was beneficial to my photography since I was able to gain different perspectives from other mediums. Taking Furniture Making was an entirely new experience that taught me elements of design that I now utilize in the photographic medium.

What are your plans for after graduation?

After graduation I am planning on hiking and traveling to national parks before beginning a career as a Fine Art Photographer.

Do you have any advice for current students?

Talk with your professors about their experiences in the medium/industry you are involved in. They are here to provide support and have a lot of insight to the field they teach. I have found that when facing obstacles, a professor may have experienced similar plights during their career and their perspective can be beneficial.

If you were going to sum up your experience at Columbia in one sentence, what would you say?

Wild ride, but a hell of a time.
