Internships: Your Bridge to the Industry

At Semester in LA, we see internships as more than just work experience—they are a launchpad into the entertainment and creative industries. Whether you're passionate about film, television, music, digital media, theater, comedy, marketing, artificial intelligence, or entrepreneurship, an internship in Los Angeles can connect you with industry leaders and open doors to your dream career.

Internship Requirements

  • Minimum of 75 hours per semester at an internship aligned with your field.
  • Time commitment varies:
    • Spring & Fall: Most companies expect interns 2-3 days per week.
    • Summer: Expect to work 3-5 days per week due to higher demand.

MEDI 334: The Key to Securing Top Internships

Upon acceptance into SiLA, you'll enroll in MEDI 334, a one-credit, asynchronous online course taught by Columbia’s Assistant Director of Internships. This class is designed to give you a competitive edge by helping you:
Master the application process
Craft standout resumes & cover letters
Develop personalized internship search strategies

Why Plan Ahead?

  • Top internships open applications 9 months in advance and close 6 months out—early preparation is key.
  • MEDI 334 must be completed with a passing grade and is strongly recommended 2 semesters before you attend SiLA for the best opportunities.

Internship Course Credit

Once you arrive in L.A, your internship is integrated into a 3-credit academic course, where you'll engage in career-focused discussions with industry professionals and fellow SiLA students.
