Carol Cohen Award

for continuing undergraduate students

The Carol Cohen Award was established to assist Theatre Design and Technology majors and Theatre Arts Production and Practice majors with a concentration in Design and Technology with expenses related to research projects within their studies. Research expenses may include but are not limited to conferences, workshops, study abroad, and research trips. The award may also be used to facilitate other experiences related to the student's studies to help complete a project.

• How to Apply

  Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the Carol Cohen Award application. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. 

  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Carol Cohen Award application. There are three parts to the application:

  PART 1: ESSAY

  In 250 words, describe your research project, timeline for the project, and how your experience will enrich your studies at Columbia.

  Please Note: Applicants may create a project as a group, but each must submit an application individually.

  PART 2: BUDGET PROPOSAL

  Upload a budget proposal for your research project.

  Your proposal must be double-spaced, and include your name and Columbia ID number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Please upload your proposal in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

  PART 3: OPTIONAL PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL

  Upload promotional material related to your research project.

  Please combine all of your material into ONE document. Upload your document in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

• About Carol Cohen
  Carol Cohen is a freelance costume designer who later attended Columbia to study theatre design. In 2011, Ms. Cohen began her scholarship to fund travel for theatre design students studying costume design, lighting design, set design, technical theatre, and stage management.
• Scholarship Terms
  • Application must be submitted by the appropriate deadline for review by the committee
  • Amount of this one-semester award is a stipend up to $1,000 (not to exceed total cost of the research project)
  • The award is applied toward research costs related to study in Theatre Design and Technology
  • Recipients will receive the stipend after census of the semester for which they applied
  • Recipients must be enrolled full-time during the Spring 2026 term
  • Recipients must be enrolled full-time during the 2025-26 academic year 
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
  • Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
