John Schultz and Betty Shiflett Endowed Story Workshop Scholarship

for continuing undergraduate students

The John Schultz and Betty Shiflett Endowed Story Workshop Scholarship was established to help defray the cost of tuition for talented, deserving writing students majoring in English and/or Creative Writing.

  Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the College-Wide Undergraduate Scholarship Application. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. 

  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete John Schultz and Betty Shiflett Endowed Story Workshop Scholarship application. There is one part to the application:

  PART 1: WRITING SAMPLE 
  

  Submit up to 25 pages of fiction (short story or novel excerpt) or creative nonfiction.

  Your manuscript should be professional in appearance, in the manner in which you would submit for publication (12-point font). Please include the title, page numbers, and your MyColumbia ID number on the manuscript. Do not include your name. Manuscripts should be work first written, or substantially revised, in the past year. Students are strongly advised to seek counsel from recent instructors about what material to submit.

• About John Schultz and Betty Shiflett

  The John Schultz and Betty Shiflett Endowed Story Workshop Scholarship fund, established in 1997, was the idea of John Schultz and Betty Shiflett, Emeritus Professors and distinguished teachers of writing in both the graduate and undergraduate Fiction Writing programs at Columbia College Chicago. Their generous and substantial individual donations seeded the Scholarship Fund in its initial year and were matched with donations from alumni, faculty, staff, and students, as well as from friends of the Fiction Writing Department.
  
  The scholarships are a tribute to the force and depth of John Schultz’s and Betty Shiflett’s teaching, and an affirmation of the power of the Story Workshop method originated and developed by John Schultz. The Story Workshop methodology is a profoundly democratic pedagogy that, recognizing degrees of talent, draws first and always upon the voice and imagination each individual brings to the classroom.

  

• Scholarship Terms
  • Application must be submitted by February 1, 2025 (11:59 p.m.) for review by the committee
  • Previous amount of this one-year scholarship was up to $2,600, awarded half in Fall and half in Spring
  • Scholarship is applied toward tuition only
  • Students’ scholarships that are applied toward tuition may not exceed the amount of their tuition costs
  • Recipients must maintain undergraduate enrollment during the 2025-26 academic year
  • Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their scholarship during the semester spent abroad
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans)will apply; Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the scholarship in any year in which, at the sole direction of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
