Tribune McCormick Diversity Internship Program

for continuing undergraduate students

The Tribune McCormick Diversity Internship Program provides internship funding for undergraduate students majoring in Journalism and Photojournalism.

• How to Apply

  Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the Tribune McCormick Diversity Internship Program application. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. 

  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Tribune McCormick Diversity Internship Program application. There are five parts to the application:

  PART 1: Resume

  Upload a one-page resume outlining career and academic highlights.

  Please Note: Your resume must include your name and MyColumbia ID number in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. Please upload your resume in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

  PART 2: Essay

  Upload a one-page essay outlining your commitment to journalism and your career path.

  Your essay must be double-spaced, and include your name and MyColumbia ID number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Please upload your proposal in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

  PART 3: Work Samples

  Please upload 3 to 5 samples of work in the following formats: 

  Images: .jpg, .png, .gif

  Video: .mov, .wmv, .flv

  Audio: .mp3

  Documents: .pdf

  Please Note: Upload size limit is 50 MB

  PART 4: Internship Documentation

  Optional: Upload any internship offer letters or other documentation you have already received. It is not required that you have been offered an internship before applying, but this will expedite the administration of the award should you be selected.

  PART 5: FAFSA Submission Summary

  A current FAFSA Submission Summary must be on file. To receive a FAFSA Submission Summary, students must complete a 2024-25 financial aid application (FAFSA) by November 15, 2024.

• Scholarship Terms
  • Application must be submitted by application deadline (11:59 pm) for review by the committee
  • Award amount is a $2,500 stipend
  • Students must maintain enrollment during their internship
  • Students must be accepted for a writing-oriented journalism internship. Students registering their internships for 3 credits must be accepted for an internship by February 3, 2025. Students registering for 1 credit must be accepted for an internship by March 3, 2025. Students who do not register an internship and provide an Internship Agreement to the Career Center by the deadline will forfeit the award
  • Students are responsible for searching for and applying to internships, and recipients of the award are not guaranteed an internship. Students may work with an Internship and Career Advisor and may set up an appointment through Handshake
    • Jennifer Halperin is currently the Internship and Career Advisor for Journalism students
  • Awards will be disbursed at the beginning of the Spring 2025 semester, or within 10 business days after students register their internship
  • Columbia reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
  • The rules governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts or loans) will apply
