Semester in L.A. and the Los Angeles Fires Update
The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have profoundly affected our community, touching the lives of many loved ones, friends, and acquaintances. At SiLA, our thoughts are with all those impacted during this challenging time. We extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders, firefighters, and emergency personnel who have worked tirelessly to protect lives and property. Their unwavering dedication and bravery exemplify the extraordinary heroism that inspires us to rise above challenges and stand united as a community.
We want to reassure friends, family, the Columbia community and the public that the SiLA program remains safe and fully operational. Both our classroom facilities at Sunset Las Palmas Studios and our student housing at Park La Brea are well outside the affected areas and remain secure. We are actively monitoring air quality conditions and have implemented precautions to prioritize the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff. As of January 21, 2025, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) has not issued any active air quality advisories. However, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recently issued guidance for those in areas where windblown ash is present. For added comfort and safety, we have shared the following recommendations with our students:
- Limit outdoor activities, especially for sensitive individuals.
- Use N95 masks when outdoors to protect against ash particles.
- Keep windows and doors closed to prevent ash from entering living spaces.
- Utilize air purifiers to maintain indoor air quality.
Classes are scheduled to begin, in person, as planned on Monday, January 27, 2025. We are in close communication with college leadership and local authorities to ensure all safety considerations are addressed. Our program is prepared to adapt to any changes in conditions, with contingency plans in place to maintain the continuity of education and the well-being of our students.
Los Angeles is a city that thrives on resilience, creativity, and collaboration. While these fires have presented challenges, they have also highlighted the strength and determination of this community. As our Spring students prepare to arrive, we look forward to welcoming them into a safe and supportive environment where they will not only learn but also contribute to the city’s vibrant, re-emerging culture.
Thank you for your continued support and concern. #LAStrong
