What would you say has been the most surprising thing you learned at Columbia?

The most surprising thing Columbia taught me is that the relationships you build will take you further in your career than your diploma alone. From your classmates to your professors, you never know when you will be coworkers at the same company. That is why forming lasting relationships with like-minded and passionate individuals early provides the foundation necessary to build a successful career.

What experiences or courses at Columbia do you feel have been most beneficial?

Although course material was important, it was not as beneficial to my development as the experiences I gained by communicating with professors beyond the class setting. Our professors already have admirable careers, and they can offer the wisdom necessary for your success. Seeking advice and guidance provides lessons no course could fulfill; it is your responsibility to ask the right questions to achieve your goals.

What are your plans for after graduation?

My career goal after graduation is to be a 3D Character and Texture Artist at a Triple-A studio like Insomniac Games, NetherRealm Studios, or Naughty Dog.

Do you have any advice for current students?

As effective as Columbia’s academic curriculums are, no one is responsible for your individual success. Every artist’s duty is to be the most proficient and skilled version of themselves; you do what you can with what you have. The industry is competitive, so acknowledge what differentiates you from the whole and refine your skills. I believe it is important to surround yourself with individuals who share the same drive for success; beyond college, your classmates will be your friendly competition.
