Emilly Olivares
Creative Writing BA, Minor in Advertising '23
“At Columbia, I was empowered to discover my creative voice,” says the recent Creative Writing graduate.
What would you say has been the most surprising thing you learned at Columbia?
Sharing your creative work is a vulnerable thing to do but essential for growth and visibility. I learned that rejection can be a positive experience because it demonstrates that you have the courage and determination to contribute to the art community and society. Most importantly, you are the only one who can truly advocate for yourself and your work.
What individuals or programs at Columbia were helpful to you in reaching your goal of graduating?
There is a network of incredibly talented and passionate people at Columbia that I had the pleasure of meeting. I learned from my peers, professors, and staff. Jennifer Halperin, Associate Professor Anne Marie Mitchell, Adjunct Devon Polderman, Associate Professor Jackie Spinner, and Adjunct Doug Whippo were incredibly influential during my time at Columbia. Without the Career Center and career fairs, I wouldn’t have gained the experience I hoped for as a full-time student.
I’ll forever remember my J-term in Paris with the English and Creative Writing Department and all the fiction workshops and seminars in literary interpretation!
What are your plans for after graduation?
First, I want to do some traveling! As for career goals, I plan to pursue editorial opportunities in publishing, corporate communications, or copywriting roles.
If you were going to sum up your experience at Columbia in one sentence, what would you say?
At Columbia, I was empowered to discover my creative voice.
