Communication BA '23
“… once I got to Columbia, I found that I was able to meet new friends and colleagues in an environment that fostered connection and communication between students of all disciplines,” says the recent Communication graduate.
What would you say has been the most surprising thing you learned at Columbia?
I've learned that it's a lot easier to talk and connect with people than you might think. Socializing was always difficult for me growing up, but once I got to Columbia, I found that I was able to meet new friends and colleagues in an environment that fostered connection and communication between students of all disciplines. I treasure the friends I've made during my time at Columbia and feel better equipped to connect to the world through my work.
What individuals or programs at Columbia were helpful to you in reaching your goal of graduating?
David Trinidad, Jeffory Jacobson, Tony Trigilio, and Lisa Fishman were all valuable mentors to me while I was in their poetry and creative writing classes. Within the Communication Department, Yonty Friesem helped not only me but all my classmates in our Columbia journeys and was an invaluable source of guidance and wisdom.
What are your plans for after graduation?
No matter what I do, I know I'll continue writing in some form or another! I hope to continue developing my skills as a creative writer while also applying the knowledge I've gained from my major to fields like copywriting or digital marketing. I also plan to continue advocating for disability, mental health, and LGBTQ+ rights and awareness for myself and others.
If you were going to sum up your experience at Columbia in one sentence, what would you say?
"Keep making trouble 'til you find what you love." – Fall Out Boy
